The Whitney Museum's Bitstreams exhibition of sound
art was one of a growing number of exhibitions that aims to expose the
ever-altering links between sound art, DJing, music, multimedia and culture
as a whole.
Aiming to transgress all the usual boundaries of such an exhibition, the
Whitney's selection of artists is a rather complete one. Taking in the
works of experimenters such as the Fluxus artist Toné from Japan,
Gregor Asch (perhaps better known as DJ Olive The Audio Janitor), DISC
and Jim O'Rourke, Bitstreams points to the fact that the digital realm,
when used inventively, can truly produce some provocative results.
Featuring a selection of works from the exhibition, this double CD set
is recommended for anyone interested in the notions of multimedia sound
works, collage and electronic experimentation.
